Hermann Upmann was a banker from Germany who loved Cuban cigars so much that he moved to Havana in 1844, where he worked from then on as a banker and cigar manufacturer. His bank had to close shortly after 1920, but his cigars live on as an excellent example of a Habano of light to medium-bodied flavor. The guarantor of Upmann's success was his commitment to delivering only first-class quality. The H.Upmann -Habanos were known for their packaging in noble boxes made of the wood of Spanish cedars together with a guarantee statement and the signature of Hermann Upmann - the production took place and still takes place in Havana.

Until about 10 years ago, this charming small cigar was also available without a tubo. Since then, it has formed a series with two other short Coronas that are only available in aluminium. Even before the revolution, it was part of the brand's portfolio. Amazingly, it burns for up to 40 minutes!
Flavours
A very classic HU cigar. The characteristic woody aromas here seem somewhat darker and heartier than in some other representatives of the brand, an effect that can also be observed in small Coronas from RyJ. Nevertheless, it seems pleasantly mild and gentle, not as concentratedly spicy as many other particularly dark Habanos. A nice hint of cocoa and the classic, creamy nutty flavours complete the harmonious taste picture. An underrated cigar that is more suitable for concentrated enjoyment than for a quick smoke on the side.

Since HU launched this tiny cigar in 2011 in an effort to meet the growing demand for creamy, cool-burning cigars with a short smoking time (25 – 35 minutes), it has taken the hearts of aficionados by storm. Hardly any Habanos small format is more compatible with beginners, hardly any more popular. And rightly so!

A brilliant blend! Despite being only 3.5“ long, there is a clear progression of flavours. From a blissfully sweet, floral and wonderfully fine-flavoured start with a moderate strength, the flavour goes in a nobler, full-bodied direction from the hint onwards, with pleasantly leathery notes, the cedar and oak scent that accompanies all HU formats, as well as a mocha-like coffee aroma that is reminiscent of HdM on the one hand, and even Cohiba on the other. A real little taste bomb with a wonderfully soft smoke consistency, overall smooth medium strength. A must for every Habanos novice!

Currently, the trend seems to be a bit slow, but about 5 years ago, short, thick „Short Smokes“ were literally on everyone's lips. H.Upmann also took the zeitgeist into account and launched this great, beginner-friendly Gordito with 50 – 75 minutes of smoking time in 2016 as the youngest child of the Magnum family so far.
Flavours
If the 46 represents the crisp and the 50 the complex side of the Magnum blend, the 54 stands for creaminess, mildness and sweetness. A dreamlike smoke consistency, gentle cedar wood spiciness, finest almond and cereal taste, honey on the palate and the aroma of latte present a rather light, beginner-friendly smoke with imposing smoke volume and extremely uncomplicated burning. Nevertheless, a development in the course of the smoke towards more body and darker notes is quite perceptible. Occasionally, there are also clearly stronger specimens.
Worth knowing
This large Robusto with a special cigar ring is only available from very well-stocked network retailers. It is delivered in cabinet boxes (with sliding lids), which are particularly suitable for maturing. Launched relatively late (2013), it delights friends of gentle tobacco enjoyment for about 75 – 90 minutes.

The „Conni A“ is a decidedly light, beginner-friendly cigar. Nevertheless, it offers a rich, full-bodied and varied flavour picture of mild and sweet, but also mildly spicy aromas. Upmann-typical cedar and melting notes, like those of roasted peanuts, gradually overlay the initial honey and white bread without ever suppressing them. The smoke consistency is permanently of a special creaminess, reminiscent of latte, even caramel. It thus offers a thoroughly brand-typical aroma that is also reminiscent of cigars from Quai d’Orsay and Hoyo de Monterrey. This exclusive Habano from Toro Gordo dimensions is one of the latest strokes of genius from the famous H.Upmann brand. Announced in 2017, it reached well-known specialist dealers in mid-2018 and, like its 5-year-old “sister”, quickly conquered the hearts of aficionados. Only available from us throughout Nuremberg! Smoking time approx. 80 - 95 minutes.
Flavours
Like all “Connis” This is also one of the more slightly mixed HU.s, but is a little stronger than the „A”. It has the special balance and complexity in common with it, but tastes significantly different in detail. Matching the darker wrapper colour, it is more of “muted” Flavors shaped – one thinks more of oak than of cedar, of lightly saturated tea than of milky coffee, of forest honey than of meadow honey. Its sweetness is a bit more subtle, but still clearly present, with more spice, mild roasted aromas and piquant notes in play. Nevertheless, a captivatingly gentle smoke that is good-natured right through to the end.
Worth knowing
Everything about this pre-revolution Habano is classic – the „Hermoso No. 4“ format, the quintessentially Cuban tobacco blend, even the (unlike the other „Connis“!) correct spelling of the Frenchösic. A perfect starter cigar for 45 – 60 minutes that must be tried.
Flavours
The taste could hardly be more typically Cuban. The medium-bodied smoke offers a charming honey and a wonderfully creamy umami character reminiscent of cereals and light nuts, which is complemented by the classic, noble HU woody facets (especially cedar). As the smoke progresses, it becomes a little more intense, darker and richer, with a spicy leathery aspect, but always remains exciting and balanced. A decidedly „uncomplicated“ cigar with a mostly rather light draw and a particularly harmonious taste.
Worth knowing
Brand new on the market is this delightful cigar, a slightly enlarged Robusto with the curious format name „Bohemios“. Connoisseurs of the multi-award-winning brand were expecting a real banger – and the excellent new release with 65 – 80 minutes of smoking time really disappoints no one!

While some cigars of the brand officially classified as „light to medium“ are rather rich in aroma and strength, the „Conni 2“ is actually a relatively light and mild cigar. Nevertheless, it offers everything that the experienced connoisseur expects from an Upmann: the unmistakable fine, spicy wood aromas, the creamy, spicy umami flavour as of roasted nuts, the charming honey and the more intense, wonderfully Cuban tobacco flavour in the last third, in which the body of the Habano becomes noticeably fuller. Nevertheless, it remains wonderfully beginner-friendly.

This traditional format has always existed only in a tubo. A few millimetres longer than a Mareva, it was once machine-made, while a 1/10“ shorter cigar was hand-rolled from the same blend. About 20 years ago, this confusion came to an end. Since then, the „Major“ has been a premium long filler with 35 – 50 minutes of smoking time.
Flavours
Not necessarily lighter, but a little s–er and smoother than its smaller sisters, it comes across as the just-medium flagship of HU's „AT“series. The typical Cuban aromas of cedar and leather are particularly present here, as is the delicious honey flavour that is also familiar from the very popular „Half Corona“. The certain flavourful proximity of the brand to RyJ and also Punch is undeniable here. As the smoke progresses, it, like so many Coronas, noticeably increases in strength and flavour body, the aromas become deeper and toastier.

As with other formats, the existence of machine-rolled and hand-rolled cigars of the same name was ended here in 2002 in favour of premium long-fillers. Unfortunately, this great, long-produced cigärrchen has been listed as „discontinued“ for 2 years now – so grab it while you can!

The Coronita glows with a surprising tart freshness that sets it apart from the other Tubo Coronas of the brand. Nevertheless, the typical wood and nut flavours are also present. One of the würzigeren, flavourful „darker“ Upmann habanos, it is by no means particularly strong. A playful, fragrant smoke full of herbal ¨therik, yet with great umami notes. The flavour remains quite consistent, but it offers around 40 minutes of wonderful flavour, puff after puff!

This 11cm Panetela has always existed at HU, but it has only been hand-rolled as a longfiller since 2003. The official format designation is identical to the trade name. The mini-smoke may seem a little out of date, but connoisseurs particularly appreciate its elegant blend. 30 – 40 minutes of smoking time.

A seductively sweet Upmann. The narrow ring gauge drips a little – the aromatics are not as concentrated and spicy as one might expect, but carried by plenty of honey, floral scents and a gentle R&R flavour. In fact, it is not a little reminiscent of the brand's „Half Corona“, but in the background it unfolds a very subtle additional cocoa note under all the spicy woodiness and sweetness. At times, one has the pleasantly irritating feeling of smoking a much bigger cigar. The variety and breadth of the flavour palette is impressive.

Like many other smaller Coronas of the „big“ Cuban brands, this one was also machine-made until the change of ownership in 2002, but since then it has been a premium long filler. Smoking time approx. 40 – 55 minutes.
Flavours
Cremas with their thin ring gauge often have a very distinctive and concentrated flavour, including this one. The wonderful, exotic precious woods that are so characteristic of HU, such as the coffee/cocoa flavour of Montecristo or the citrus notes of Bolivia, are particularly expressive. The classic honey can also be tasted; at the same time, a less brand-typical, discreetly chocolaty note emerges in the course of the smoke. The smoke consistency fully lives up to the format name.
