As with other great Habanos brands, for example Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta, the name Sancho Panza comes from a masterpiece of world literature. Sancho Panza is the faithful squire of the traveling knight Don Quixote in the novel of the same name by Miguel de Cervantes, who is revered as a national poet in Spain. The first part was published in 1605 and is still considered one of the best books in world literature. The name Sancho Panza was first used to describe a Habano in 1848 and the brand has enjoyed an excellent reputation among experienced aficionados ever since. The brand was founded by a German named Emil Ohmstedt, who is also said to have been the birthmother of the El Rey del Mundo brand. In the 1950s, Sancho Panza was one of the most popular Habanos brands in Spain. To this day, the cigars are said to have great aging potential. Today, the range includes only two cigars. With their medium-bodied blend of filler and binder leaves from the Vuelta Abajo tobacco growing zone, all formats are totalmente a mano, tripa larga - completely handmade long fillers.

Älteren Aficionados entfährt bei diesem Markennamen ein Seufzer – was hatte Sancho Panza früher für viele tolle Formate! 2019 hat es auch noch die Mareva „Non Plus“ erwischt, nur diese Veteranin trägt noch die täuschend unscheinbare Anilla. Aber: Was für ein Blend!! 70 – 90 Minuten Rauchdauer.
Aromen
„Sanchos“ schmecken einfach unverwechselbar. Einerseits leicht als Habanos zu erkennen, besitzen sie doch einen ureigenen Grundgeschmack, der nicht wenige Fans an das Meer denken lässt. Ein angenehm salziges Prickeln an den Lippen, eine schwer definierbare, feine herbale Frische mit mineralischen Beiklängen – was sich etwas kurios lesen mag, schmeckt am Gaumen einfach unglaublich lecker. Zumal die Zigarre auch eine ausgeprägte andere Seite hat – mit ölig-weichem Umami-Geschmack, an Braten (!) erinnernden animalischen Noten, ja einer wunderbaren, sanften Deftigkeit; all das bei mittlerer Stärke. Brillant!
Die Sancho Panza Non Plus mit ihrer Länge von 12,6 cm, einem Durchmesser von 1,6 cm und 40er Ringmaß liegen leider nicht im Trend. Zudem ist um die kleine kubanische Marke in den letzten Jahren nicht viel passiert. Jedenfalls ist sie handgerollt aus Tabaken des besten Anbaugebiets Kubas: Vuelta Abajo.
